dataview shows the same item

Hi

In sharepoint designer 2007 i insert a new aspx page with dataview. i linked the page as an Edit Item Form Page Of a simple list (under supporting file).

i see the page with the dataview when i edit the items in that list but... no matter what item i choose to edit, it always shows the same item- the data of the first item in the list instead of showing the specific item im trying to edit.

any ideas what can cause such a thing?
