How to improve appearance on SP2013 List Drop Downs for Managed Terms

I'm new to this, and not a developer, so please bear with me.  I've noticed the following when choosing to filter on a column in a list, when that column is a managed metadata column:

  1. The left alignment does not follow what one would expect.  Parent topics (let’s say in Outlook) all align, with the expand symbol to the left of all.
  2. The width of the drop down menu is not sufficient to hold long terms (yes, I'm trying to get them to be shorter)
  3. If I scroll down and choose a term towards the bottom of the list, I am thrown back to the top of the menu selections and have to scroll again to see the term I selected.
  4. When I do select a parent term, its children are not indented beneath it, so it is difficult to understand the relationship.
  5. Why are there two scroll bars in the window?

Can you offer some advice on how to make the menu more palatable and less confusing for the user?  Thanks very much for the help!
