SPD workflow email won't send automatically, but does manually

After 3 days of testing and trial and error i'm still coming up empty on this issue.  I've seen many others with a similar issue but with no resolution.

I am using WSS 3.0

I have created workflows via SPD that start automatically when a new item is added to a library.  I have done so on 8 different libraries, all with identical workflows, and 3 of them work all the time and 5 don't.  All work when started manually, however.  At this point i'm not sure when they stopped working and if they worked to begin with.

The ones that do work, work like a charm.  They collect user names during the upload process from the person uploading and the WF sends an automated email to those chosen users.  It's our distribution.

Here's the kicker.  The key component is a field I called "distribute to" which is a people or group type field.  After some searching around on the net someone mentioned the possible need to have something present in the "assigned to" field in a WF.  That made me realize that the 3 functioning workflows used that field, but I just renamed them for my usage.  The other 5 used a field I created instead.  So I removed my created field and added the renamed "assigned to" field but it still didn't work.

I then completely rebuilt my WF, and it still didn't work.

Oh, and by didn't work I mean that the WF comes back as completed and fills in all the fields appropriately but it doesn't actually send the email it is supposed to.  When run manually, however, it does work correctly.

Below is the error that I do receive in the logs, anyone have any suggestions at all?  FYI, I did no custom coding myself but am using an activity found here http://spdactivities.codeplex.com/releases/view/10103 .  I did try to create a workflow without using any of the custom activities and it still didn't work.

I also get these errors alot, which may be related:

An SPRequest object was not disposed before the end of this thread. To avoid wasting system resources, dispose of this object or its parent (such as an SPSite or SPWeb) as soon as you are done using it. This object will now be disposed. Allocation Id: {4D0E9A8C-6A5A-4557-8834-20F7D2F0FFEA}

thanks in advance
