Remove URL from WSS 3.0 Quick Launch Header

Hello:

I've been searching all morning for a solution to this and I am hoping someone else has a definitive answer.  I am simply trying to remove the hyperlink attached to each header item on a WSS 3.0 single-server config. 

Here's what I've tried:

• Sharepoint Designer 2007 -> Navigation settings
• WSS 3.0 -> Site Settings -> Quick Launch, Edit Header
• Change URL to simply "/" (still does not fully do what I need)

Would someone please kindly direct me to a solution or article?
