how to pass variable to sharepoint list from hyperlink

Hi, is it possible to pass a variable to a sharepoint list via a hyperlink?

i.e http://sharepoint/listname/newitem.aspx?id=1234

so that the ID 1234 is pre populated in the new item form when the user clicks the link?

the link is to be found in an email.
