Using a word 2007 template with quickparts Propagated by sharepoint

OK I am a bit stumped by this problem.

I am currently helping to develop a custom solution using sharepoint and office for the legal industry. The designer has a requirement that sharepoint populate
some quickpart fields in the word document with data provided from custom fields in the document library. This I have managed to do no problem.

However we want this to make a word template , so that when the user creates a document using that template the information from the custom fields
is automatically put into the areas on the document where the quickparts have been placed.

If I create a word document and insert the quickparts into the appropriate places on the document , if I change the value in the custom field this will be reflected in the document if I open it up again.

However if I try and use a template that has had the quickparts placed in the appropriate positions and make that a sharepoint template and use that to create a document with , the quickparts  linking to my custom fields are broken and no data is displayed. This however does not  apply to the standard  quickpart controls. If I use the title quickpart in the body of a word document and turn that into a sharepoint template it works with the standar
 ones like title , updating without problem.
